Trending Christmas Ads
In the News
It’s officially time to get into the Christmas spirit now that the major retailers have put their much anticipated 2024 ads out. From cartoon carrots to a modern day Mrs Claus, we discuss which retailers we think have done tree-mendously well and which have got a little lost in the snow.
John Lewis
Arguably the most anticipated festive advert each year, it really feels like it marks the start of the festive season. This year’s advert didn’t strike us as the best from the start, and took a couple of watches to really unpick the true meaning behind the chaos. It is a very fast-paced ad with a lot going on (potentially to resemble today’s world), but ultimately has a wonderful meaning. It showcases the charm and importance of looking back into memories and putting real effort into finding that perfect gift, especially for a sister.

M&S
This year’s Marks and Spencer ad is a really jolly and easy watch following a simple storyline and touching on the pressure some people feel at Christmas. Simply having a bit of help is sometimes what is needed! The clear “M&S makeover” the house gets is great and showcases all the delicious offerings very well. However, there isn’t a particularly emotive aspect of this ad and it doesn’t have a real wow-factor about it.

Aldi
The return of Kevin the Carrot! This might just be our favourite one this year. This advert feels like a whole movie in 1.5 minutes with a great storyline that includes a lot of creativity and humour. The continuation of a “Kevin story” is great whilst still feeling fresh and new. Another great thing about this ad is that it seems appealing to all age groups and each time you watch it you spot something new. Whilst being enjoyable and festive, Aldi manages to show off their festive food amongst it all too!

Boots
Here we have a fresh take on Father Christmas, focusing on a modern day Mrs Claus. Throughout this ad we see a woman in charge, organising the elves and ensuring everything is done in time. Although it has received a little bit of backlash, it is a resemblance of some households where the woman does a lot of the shopping, cooking and wrapping ahead of the big day. We think it is great and challenges the narrative of Father Christmas doing all the hard work!

It is always interesting seeing Christmas adverts, especially from a marketing perspective, where you can really unpick the product. From the initial idea all the way through to the execution we realise it takes an absolute army to create these adverts and they will always be criticised by some as they are seen by so many!
We would love to hear your favourite Christmas advert of 2024.
Festive wishes,
Jo & Vic
